Home > Samoëns

Samoens is a small French village in the south of the the Rhone-Alps region. In 2011 the town had only 2299 residents, and so the decision was made to merge together the ski resort with the surrounding villages, Morrillon, Flaine, Sixt and Les Carroz to form the Grand Massif.

The name "Samoens" is form 1167, and derives from a medieval expression that means "the seven mountains" that surround the village: Cuidex,Vigny,Folly, Oddaz,Bostan,Chardonnière,Freterolles and LaVullie. This is why local residents are referred to as the "Septimontains".
